When Brisbane, Australia native Phamie Seils discovered that George Strait was serious about this tour is her past, she knew she had to get to the United States for at least a demonstration of his Cowboy Rides Away tour.
Undeterred by time and distance, she packed her bags, bought a ticket and traveled over 7,300 miles to the Tacoma Dome to see the King of Country do his thing. When asked what it meant for her to be there to see their hero in the flesh, his eyes misted and quietly drowned alone "awesome" word.
"Awesome" almost sums actually. If this is the way Strait tries to leave, then I think it's safe to say he is doing most of the time he has left. Strutting the shadows in a light plaid shirt, and a pair of tight jeans with a belt buckle set shiny Silver Square in the middle and black Resistol hat atop his head, he looked every bit the musician we have come to know and love over the years.
The stage setup was made its way to foreign standards for Tacoma Dome, as it was placed in the center of the site with people on all sides. Through the night, the singer alternated between four different microphones to ensure that everyone was given a good view several times.
Starting with the opening number, a raucous take on their 1985 hit “The Fireman " Strait and his Ace In The Hole Band performed over thirty cuts one of the most revered country music catalogs . For nearly two hours , the Texas - native border held the packed stadium audience in the palm of your hand. They sang in unison during “Amarillo by Morning" and "All My Exes Live in Texas ". They teared up during “I Believe" and” I'll Always Remember You." Even square danced for a cover of the Johnny Cash classic “Folsom Prison Blues".
Although 61 years old at the time, and with patches of gray and light wrinkles to prove it, Narrow sounded terrible. The voice that feeds 60 of his songs at number one on the charts has not slipped a bit. His band was sharp as a tack as well, and there was not a lost signal or a fluffy note all night.
Those keeping score may have noticed that the list of songs on this tour has not deviated much from city to city, but the narrowness of the sacrifices surprise that more than makes up for in insight. The show runs like a well oiled machine, with a truly great cross section of decade -spanning hits and a couple of unexpected covers.
The brands were affected very well overnight, but none more so surprised when veteran Spokane area Strait Chris Lacy Atkins and his wife with the keys to a brand new home. It was a touching gesture, one that narrows at each show, and the crowd showed their appreciation and admiration for the shower the couple with some of the loudest cheers of the night.
George Strait has been a constant in country music since the early 1980s. It is almost impossible to imagine a world in which he does not choose to share their music with a live audience again. But if you are really willing to walk away, certainly came in style at the Tacoma Dome.
When asked at the end of the night, if the trip across the Pacific Ocean to see a man play his music was worth, Phamie Seils captured the mood full of all attendees by flashing a smile of size of Texas and yelling, " Aw, hell yeah! " she had not seen God that day, but as a fan of the man who sang it did, she had seen something very similar.
